Support House Opens New Supportive Housing Building on Maria Street in Acton
Maria Street facility opens the door to safe housing, on-site supportive services, and healthier communities in Halton Hills
ACTON, ON — June 18, 2026 — Support House officially opened its new supportive housing building at 47 Maria Street in Acton. The fully accessible two-storey, 12-unit building includes shared community and program space and provides safe, supportive housing with on-site services and access to interprofessional primary care for people experiencing housing instability, mental health and substance use concerns, and dual diagnosis.
“Everyone has the right to housing and healthcare,” said Christina Jabalee, Executive Director of Support House. “With Maria Street, Support House is opening the door to equitable, low-barrier access to safe housing, on-site supportive services, and access to interprofessional primary care. Through strong community and system partnerships, we can continue building healthier, more inclusive communities across Halton together.”
“We are grateful to our partners at every level of government for making this building a reality.” Jabalee added.
Halton Region provided $3.94 million for the project, with an additional $2 million in funding from the federal government through Reaching Home: Canada's Homelessness Strategy. The new building contributes to the Region's comprehensive plan to address the increased demand for supportive housing in Halton.
Support House was joined at the opening by Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor.
“Reaching Home gives communities and organizations like Halton Hills, the Region of Halton, and Support House the capacity to help people find safe, stable, and affordable housing,” said Kristina Tesser Derksen, Member of Parliament for Milton East—Halton Hills South. “This new home at 47 Maria Street in Acton, with wraparound services that support housing stability, wellness, and community connection, is a perfect example of this funding in action.”
For Halton Region, which contributed $3.94 million to the project, the new building represents the latest step in a broader commitment to delivering more assisted and supportive housing across the region. “We invested in the Maria Street project because we believe everyone in our community deserves a safe and supportive place to call home," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. " Thank you to Support House and the Federal Government for their partnership in this project. Today's opening demonstrates the meaningful impact we can achieve when we work together and reflects our shared commitment to providing housing for those with the greatest need in the Halton community.”
In Halton Hills, the new building marks an important expansion of the supportive housing available within the town itself. “Halton Hills is a stronger and more compassionate community when every resident has a safe place to call home," said Mayor Ann Lawlor. "The opening of the Maria Street building brings essential supportive housing right here to Acton, expanding the range of housing options our town can offer to those who need it most. I am grateful to Support House, Halton Region, and the federal government for their partnership on this important project, and proud that this much-needed building now stands as part of our community.”
Studies from CMHA show that investing in supportive housing and peer support programming saves considerably across the healthcare, social services, and justice sectors. A person in social housing costs the sector approximately $613 per month. If that person were in a shelter, that cost would increase to $1,840 per month. If that person ends up in a hospital bed, it costs the system $20,000-plus per month.
Jabalee explained, "Investment in supportive housing provide access to much needed housing options to meet the needs of all Halton residents, most importantly, it promotes dignity, respect and social inclusion. Everyone has the right to housing and healthcare."
